I can see this blog post being one of the more popular posts I will ever put on this site. For those who aren’t from the east coast of Canada, donair sauce is a staple in any pizza joint, deli, pub, etc...
It is most commonly found on donairs (known as kebabs to most of the world), but also served on garlic fingers (another thing that is primarily found on the east coast) and I’m sure most people at one point in their life have poured it on a slice of pizza at 3am.
So incredibly tasty, so incredibly un-healthy, but so incredibly easy to make, so it balances out right? RIGHT???
You can’t seem to find this sauce outside of eastern Canada. I’ve been in deli’s all across our beautiful country and tasted things called Sweet Sauce, Garlic Sauce and even seen people put Tzatziki on donairs. All of these were delicious, but to the east coast purists, there is only one sauce that fits the bill.

Ingredients:
Condensed Milk (or Evaporated Milk)
Sugar
Vinegar
Garlic Powder
Garlic Powder
Think of this recipe as a ratio.
The ratio is (wait for it) 1:1, condensed milk:white sugar. So if you have a cup of condensed milk, you have a cup of sugar. The easiest way to do it is empty the can of milk in a bowl and fill the empty can up with sugar. Add the vinegar to taste. Start with 2 teaspoons and try it. Add more if you think it needs it. Same with the garlic powder, add it to taste. Start with 1/4 teaspoon and go from there. Chilling it in the fridge will thicken it but you can eat it right away. A little bit of this goes a long way, so you don't need to buy a big can of milk.
Using condensed milk will give you a thicker sauce than using evaporated milk.
Using condensed milk will give you a thicker sauce than using evaporated milk.
That’s all that’s to it. Doesn’t get much easier than that. Enjoy the extra calories on the already high calorie food that you are putting this on! (It's worth it)
Evaporated or Condensed Milk? I've seen recipes with both...
ReplyDeleteNice post Adam! I had actually started a post about donair sauce too but hadn't gotten around to publishing it! I used sweetened condensed instead and some garlic powder in mine:
ReplyDelete2/3 cup canned sweetened condensed milk
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/2 tsp garlic powder
Mike - I like the garlic powder idea, I'm going change the recipe to include it.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - I don't think it matters to be honest. Use which ever one you have. Condensed might be a little thicker, which is a good thing.
i've had it poured on my pizza at 3am from a jug. so grossly delicious. the meat recipe best be coming!
